Gunsmoke U.S. Marshal Badge story in the box:

James Arness was born May 26, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He earned a Purple Heart during World War II when his right leg was peppered with bullets in the battle of Anzio. In 1955, John Wayne recommended Arness for the lead role in Gunsmoke. It was one of the earliest "adult westerns," centering around the exploits of Marshall Matt Dillon in the frontier town of Dodge City, Kansas in 1873.

U.S. Marshal

There was no uniform badge in the

U.S. Marshal service until 1941, when

the Eagle Top variety was

introduced nationwide. Prior to this,

each district made its own identifying

badge. This type of badge was worn by

the infamous Earp brothers, Wyatt and

Virgil. This is also the type of badge

worn by Marshal Matt Dillon in the

television series Gunsmoke.
